simple things :: one fine afternoon – part ii

March 16, 2013 filed under: hello twiggs personal, nature & landscape, personal, simple things, simple things

first of all thank you for all your comments yesterday on the first part of this post. it is always good to know your thoughts and experiences on this freelance-working-from-home thing! the guilty feelings we have because we took some day off or even half a day must be silenced, because in truth we say, this time off can only bring benefits to our work and ourselves. so today i’m sharing the second part of my afternoon off on thursday! on a wimp we decided to take that afternoon and drive to portinho da arrábida with our cameras and dog!

Dog and owner on the rocks near the ocean Rusty edge Mr Kobe Man walking up the stairs Portinho Sign Wild Lavender Landscape in the sunset in Portinho da Arrábida Wild pink flowers Iron gate in Portinho da Arrábida Small beach Landscape in Portinho da Arrábida Serra da Arrábida Serra da Arrábida Serra da Arrábida Quinta de Alcube Road Trip, Self-portrait and Sunset Ponte 25 de Abril winter evening

i loved this afternoon so much! it was such a lovely way to take a few hours off, and the fact that we both brought our cameras with us and mr kobe, made it even more special! mr twiggs is starting to enjoy taking pictures and wants to learn more and more, so it’s nice to do this as a couple and family (yes, the dog counts!). these late afternoon and early evening shots are my favourite! i love when the sun sets in such a beautiful way and of course, the lights on this bridge are always magical.

I appreciate your blog. Even though I am retired, Life seems to be flying by. My wife is a very busy artist and I try to support her in every way. Your post is timely. We felt we were getting too much distance between us and have decided to take every Friday to leave the house/studio and go out together. Our date is usually a leisurely lunch and some art related activity. Don’t feel guilty – just do it!

hello michael! so good to have you here on the blog sharing your thoughts on this! i think that your idea is amazing and it’s so good to realize that it’s good for both parts, the creativity of your wife, as she’s an artist, and that your relationship also benefits from that! so it’s perfect!!! thank you for your support!!

Actually, I don’t see it as taking time off or having a break. Activities outside of the studio, or in your case away from your computer, are essential to creativity. While you are out you are gathering information, inspiration, looking with fresh eyes at new sights that perhaps set off a chain of thought, practising your photography skills…all very necessary and one of the cornerstones of living an artistic life! I understand you run a business, but ultimately it is a creative one and creativity can’t come from staring at a screen, it has to come from engagement with the real world.
Think of what you are doing as working in your sketchbook when you have days like these!

you are completely right suzie!!! i need to feel that way more often! i think that i’m pretty strong when it comes to not feel the guilty part, it felt amazing to go out for lunch, enjoy the sunny weather, taking our dog to a new place, for a new walk, being with mr twiggs taking photos in a new place for us… it was amazing for my creativity! as you say, it’s an engagement with the real world!!! loved your thoughts, thank you!!
