hello there sweet friends, how are you feeling today? are you having a good day? i must brag about the temperatures around here, sorry to all of you that are still in the middle of winter cold, but we’re having a beautiful 20ºc day (around 66ºf) and all i can think of is going outside and take long walks in a garden or the woods, or whatever the sun is shining! spring is definitely on our way, and though rain is much needed, right now all i wish is more days like today! and it’s curious because today i’m bringing you another story from lisbon (have you checked the lisbon’s city guide all organized by categories?) that i actually visit quite often during winter days!
i started these series with the goal of sharing my favorites wandering places, because i do love this city and i know that many of you out there have fell in love or would fall in love if you visited lisbon. it’s just this beautiful light that everyone that actually comes here, talks about, it’s the weather, the food, the architecture… and even the friendly people around (yes, we are very friendly!). and then as i received emails with questions about places to go, to shop, to eat, i thought it would be nice to include those as well! so far, this list is growing on the places to visit, but much shorter on the places to eat, shop and soon i’ll share places to stay while in lisbon as well! and now let’s talk about brunch, or lunch, or even dinner on a cozy winter day!
yes, this place is one of my favorites to go on a winter day, because there’s no much natural light inside, as these were ancient wine caves, so the walls are made of cold stone, but everything inside is just from other decades, other times… and we just travel in time with the walls, the couches, the chairs… even the sewing machines from singer set as tables. the name is delightful, fábulas (like in fables)!
fábulas is a place where you can go and drink a cup of coffee, have your breakfast, have lunch or have a table reservation with your friends to have dinner, it is that flexible! and the food is delicious! their sandwiches are different from what you find on similar places, and even the names are terribly interesting (you suddenly feel like you want to try them all!)! teas come on heavy black tea pots (you can see one here) and you have old golden candle holders, like if you were at a house from the 18th century!
i love the fact that you can find old books, old sewing machines, mirrors, lamps and even black frames with charlie chaplin pictures from the old black and white movies. it’s indeed a place for you to sit down and relax… enjoying the warmth inside, while maybe there’s rain outside!
tables are quite small or quite large, as much as the couches. this is the kind of place where you can drink your tea along with your friend only, or sit on the large table or the huge couch and share the table and couch with other guests. though this is one habit that we don’t have much here, we’re starting to get used to it, thanks to places like this! and i guess that by now, you already understood why i say this is one of my favorite places to eat something during winter time, because everything inside seems really cozy and warm. but if it’s sunny outside you can also go to the exterior area and enjoy the sun. and by the way, they have one of the most delicious chocolate cakes i’ve ever tasted! it’s moist and with a very intense chocolate flavour!
so what do you think about this place? would you enjoy such place? you can find more information on their website and if you live close by, maybe we can run into each other one of these days! and psstt, tomorrow come and take a look at the chocolate recipes brought to you by sylvie!
ps. if you’re looking for more tips on where to go, to eat, to shop in lisbon, please read the lisbon’s city guide!
