so today, instead of another new york story, i want you to walk with me in lisbon… it’s cold today, so you better bring your coat, and maybe some gloves! but as it’s also a sunny day, you will catch some sun on your face! we might even stop for a coffe, is that ok with you? so, we are going to the main avenue in lisbon, avenida da liberdade. it’s quite central and almost impossible for you to miss. we will start by marquês de pombal, which is the main roundabout on the top of the avenue and we will start going down the avenue.
one thing that is new and is so representative of the creative spirit around here, is the fact that you will find colourful benches and sidewalk poles. and you might want to notice that colours change as you go down the avenue! now this is something really cool, right? so, let’s sit a while so that i can tell you a story, shall we?
you know, one of the things that is (or perhaps, was) really popular in portugal was a kind of play that asides from being a musical, was also political and was meant to illustrate the popular aspects of our culture. mainly young people don’t get all excited about this kind of play, but the generation before ours loved it. some of the most well-known older actors and actresses are popular also because of those plays. and the curious thing was that in lisbon there was this area filled with theaters, right in the middle of this avenue where we are now, most of them dedicated to those plays, called revista. unfortunately this is something that is dying and the whole place is almost abandoned. most of those great theaters no longer work and the buildings are left to die. let’s take a look at some details of that area called parque mayer, shall we?
and now let’s eat something, shall we? and the rest will be shared next time! i hope you have enjoyed this little walk! this was a way to show you that, asides from being such a bright city, lisbon is also very colourful! it amazes me sometimes! see you tomorrow!
p.s. have you seen me back on flickr? have you joined a place for twiggs flickr group?

I love seeing the history in buildings. It’s always sad to see it abandoned, but at the same time I find it very important people know the history behind it more than anything else. Thank you for sharing!
