once i was able to afford a reflex camera i was happy as a french fry, so they say. i would finally be able to hold a fancy camera and bring some fresh air into my work, with several challenges ahead of me, for sure. but i was pretty far from imagining that this would be such a different and huge world to explore. the concepts were not strange for me, but managing exposure, apertures and focus were a small challenge every time i was going to take a picture. i wanted to learn fast. i had a bunch of magazines to read and they were quite inspiring. one feature that was pretty common among them was about setting different challenges for the photographers. try to capture the magic on architecture… or by the river at dawn… find amazing parks… get up early… shoot at night… shoot the moon… and so on, and so on… some would be difficult to start now, but one spoke to me instantly. allow yourself to shoot in monochrome and nothing else for a day or two. they say and i completely agree, when you see no colour, you tend to pay more attention to shapes and how the composition is working. i loved the challenge. see how different these look… when they lack of colour.
if you are trying to challenge yourself in photography, if you are in need for something different… why not try this challenge? try to see everything through a monochrome point of view and pay attention to all the shapes that surround you. oh by the way, which version do you like the most? the grayscale or the coloured one? see you tomorrow!

The thing is, you have to approach b&w photography differently to colour work……and by doing the exercise it helps you to see that. I am going to be writing a blog post about shooting with b&w film very soon! The b&w shot of the street decorations works really well!
