local markets :: spotless loop

November 9, 2010 filed under: handmade, inspire, local markets

hello lovely ones, how is your day going? for some of you, it has just started… for some of us… it has started a few hours ago…

today is {local markets} day and i hope you are there quietly sat because today’s artist is a very exquisite lady. why? because she brakes needles like no other artist i have met. what do i mean by this? i mean that while she does an explendid work… sometimes needles brake. but… as in for me… it is all worth it!
can you tell us something about yourself?
hi, my name is vânia romano and i was born in 1985 in lisbon, where i live and work. creating things has always been a constant aspect in my life, despite i didn’t know what i wanted to do exactly. i’ve studyed many different areas such as cinema, design, art and jewelry, always searching for something to fulfill my creative needs. i’m currently dedicating myself in full-time to my creative work and it’s been great. i’m very happy to be able to do what i want. in december. i’ll be showing my work at the 3rd edition of an independent craft fair called {festivalet at miscelanea gallery} in barcelona, so right now i’m focused on this event.

how did the spotless loop start?
{the spotless loop} it’s my new adventure, where i’m starting to expose my handmade jewelry. the idea of opening a shop started about a year ago when i became again interested in embroidery. i‘ve started to make pieces with thread and experiment a lot with fabrics. my work has evolved a lot since then and it’s always changing. now it combines embroidery and wood, which for me it’s my way of drawing, where thread is my pencil and wood my paper. my work appeals to touch, it is rich in textures and concerned with interaction between the person and the object. i think about my work as a tactile experience.

currently i’m working in wall pieces besides jewelry, i really want to make large pieces with more details, details that i can’t achieve in small pieces like jewelry, so i’m thinking on doing a series of embroidered canvas, pieces which will be able to create some impact.

what inspires you?
i get inspired by ordinary things, mostly things related with childhood, things that puts me smiling, but my greatest ideas appear to me when i’m in bed trying to sleep, i don’t know why, but it works very well, usually the next day i draw and start to make the piece. i’m always thinking on the next project, constantly brainstorming new ideas, it’s what keeps me going and excited. we never know what’s next!

what advice can you give for those small business owners in our country?
first: show your work wherever you can and don’t be afraid, feedback good or bad is valuable. second: believe in what you do and persist, never give up and eventually you’ll succeed. and third: promote your work and promote your work! if no one knows your work, no one will purchase anything.

what do you think would be helpful for small business owners in our country?
it would be great if we joined and be able to create things, projects, charity projects… anything! it would be good to see some union between small portuguese sellers. i guess what i’m trying to say is that having a strong portuguese team would be a great way to share knowledge, help and promote each other, and together we might grow.

i’ve to say that the {local markets}initiative it’s wonderful and I’ve to congratulate {… a place for twiggs} for that effort in joining and exposing the best talented portuguese artists and crafters. cheers to that!

well, cheers to {local markets} then, and cheers to all this talented handmade jewelry! i can’t wait to see those canvas! they really must be beautiful… as i also find these necklaces really romantic and of course, with a bit of traditional taste… which is obviously an amazing way of promoting our traditional values & images.

i would like to thank {the spotless loop} for being here, for showing her support and for sharing her thoughts on how to build a stronger community of portuguese talents.
