Travel to London :: wandering

Ainda no segundo dia em Londres, e depois do almoço no Borough Market, a parte da tarde foi passada a… passear. Fomos à Tate Modern que gosto sempre de visitar, mas a verdade é que muitas vezes nestes museus, o que mais gosto nem é o que está exposto na altura (umas vezes acho interessante, outras menos), mas sim as lojas do museu.

A loja da Tate Modern tem tantos livros sobre tudo e mais alguma coisa, que apetece ficar ali horas a folhear, a tentar escolher os que levar, a empilhar no braço, mas depois fazem-se as contas e percebe-se a pequena fortuna que ali temos e voltam-se a colocar novamente nos devidos sítios.

Da varanda da Tate Modern espreita-se o Thames, a St. Paul’s Cathedral, que desta vez foi vista só ao longe, a Millenium Bridge… mas depois volta-se para dentro da loja do museu e tenta-se perceber se aquele poster cabe no trolley, se vai chegar a Lisboa em boas condições ou não. Percebe-se que não, e volta-se a sair da loja de mãos vazias.

Still on the second day in London, and after our lunch at the Borough Market, the afternoon was spent… wandering. We visited Tate Modern, which I always like to visit, but I have to be honest that sometimes what I like the most is not the exhibitions themselves (some are good, some are not that interesting), but the museum shops. 

The Tate Modern shop has so many books about so many topics that I just lose track of time there. I keep reading covers, touching them, opening the books, eventually grab a few with an intention to buy them, only to a few minutes later, make the math and realize that I have a small fortune under my arm, and if I want to pay my rent on time, I really need to let those go. 

From the balcony of Tate Modern you can spot the Thames, Millennium Bridge and St. Paul’s Cathedral, that was just spotted from afar this time. And then you turn to the shop once again and try to figure out if that poster you love, can travel on your trolley without being damaged once you unpack. You realize it will be ruined, so you just leave empty handed. 

Apesar de completamente leiga na matéria, a arquitectura é sempre um dos pontos preferidos quando viajo. Gosto de ver o que é típico, apreciar as diferenças, as cores, os materiais usados e Londres tem, como já disse anteriormente, charme a transbordar na sua arquitectura. São as portas, as janelas, o tijolo, as cores, as varandas cheias de flores, os candeeiros dourados…. tanto para apreciar!

Though I’m not an expert (or anything close really) in architecture, it’s always one of the things I love to appreciate when I travel. I like to see the differences between where I live and that place, what houses are look like, the most common features and London has a lot of charm. It’s the doors, the windows, the brick houses, the colours, the balconies filled with flowers, the golden lamps… So much to appreciate!

Terminámos o dia pela Oxford Street em plena hora de ponta de autocarros, pessoas, carros, táxis e um pôr-do-sol que me deliciou. Dali demos um salto a casa para nos preparamos para o nosso jantar absolutamente maravilhoso no Social Eating House, que recomendo vivamente. No entanto é preciso reservar… com alguma antecedência. Mas vale bem a pena!

We ended our day on Oxford Street during rush hour, with so many buses stopping by, people on the sidewalk, crossing lanes, taxis and the most gorgeous sunset through the whole avenue. It gave me the chance of doing a bit of street photography and capturing some amazing candid moments. 

We went home to change and get ready for our dinner at the Social Eating House, which I truly recommend! However, you need to book… ahead. But still, oh so worth it!
