Auto-Retratos // Self-Portraits

Porque um auto-retrato é um desafio constante, é difícil, exige planeamento, tempo, persistência e coragem, este é um dos meus objectivos para 2014.

E também porque a Sílvia nos desafiou a isso, o último dia de Fevereiro foi para fazer alguns auto-retratos que tinha em mente. Ainda há mais ideias a desenvolver, mas esta estava na lista – fazer uns auto-retratos junto a esta janela da sala, onde entra tanta luz, e onde na passada sexta-feira entraram ainda raios de sol a deixar a esperança de uma primavera próxima.

Because a self-portrait is a constant challenge, demands a lot of effort, time, planning, persistence and courage, this is one of my goals for my 365 project. 

And also because Sílvia challenged all the women to do a self-portrait, the last day of February was dedicated in creating a few self-portraits. There are several of other ideias to develop, but this simple one was on the list – next to this window, with the hair up, make-up on and just play with the shadows and light. Make it somewhat ethereal looking, or just feminine and light. 

And on this day, the light was particularly beautiful with some sun peeking through the windows, making me feel hopeful for a Spring!

E nem de propósito, na sexta-feira enquanto deambulava pela internet e já nem sei bem como, mas acabei a conhecer o trabalho da Sue Bryce, uma fotógrafa neozelandesa que se especializa em retratos de mulheres. Até ao momento apenas conhecia o trabalho da fabulosa Christina Greve, mas conhecer a Sue foi também uma lufada de ar fresco.

And by coincidence, on friday while I was surfing the web, I ended up finding Sue Bryce’s work, a photographer specialised in women’s portraits. So far I had only known Christina Greve’s work, and finding Sue’s was a breathe of fresh air from everything I see on a daily basis. 

Por vezes acabamos por nos focar no que fazemos, e no tipo de trabalho que fazemos e apenas nos rodeamos de profissionais que fazem o mesmo, sejam de cá ou de fora. E eventualmente cansamo-nos de ver sempre o mesmo e a nossa própria criatividade é afectada. Por isso adoro tanto o Flickr, por me sentir inspirada pelo trabalho de tantos outros fotógrafos (profissionais e amadores) que do seu dia-a-dia registam momentos que nos convidam a entrar como se da vida deles fizéssemos parte.

Sometimes we end up focusing so much on the kind of work we do, and keeping up with the work our fellow photographers do, either nationally or internationally, that eventually we end up feeling tired of seeing just the same over and over again. 

That is why I absolutely love Flickr and went back to it. I can connect with people all over the world, living different lives, in different cultures and that amazes me. It’s quite amazing to follow their work, being most of them amateurs, because they turn a random moment in an inviting moment. And I feel that I learn so much from them.

Encontrar o trabalho da Sue foi relembrar que quero fazer mais fotografia de retrato, que é curiosamente o tipo de sessão que faço menos. Talvez as pessoas ainda não se sintam à vontade para investirem numa sessão em que é apenas focada numa só pessoa – elas próprias. Compreendo que seja preciso alguma coragem, mas as memórias de quem somos não se resume ao nosso físico… somos tão mais do que um corpo.

E pude ainda sorrir com esta frase: “Beauty is the light in the heart.” e emocionar-me com este vídeo… porque a beleza é a luz do coração, mas está também no coração. E isto sim, é coragem e força de viver!

Finding Sue’s work was a reminder that I want to do more portraiture, that is actually the kind of session I do less. Maybe people are not yet comfortable with a camera pointing at them, or adventurous to invest money in something that is just about them, but this is so much more than just a few pictures. I understand it requires courage, but the memories of who we are are not about our bodies… we are so much more than that. 

And so I smiled when I read this quote on a video by Sue “Beauty is the light in the heart.” and I also felt moved by that video… which I strongly recommend you to watch, because it’s about being strong, being beautiful, no matter the kind of body, no matter the illness… it’s just about being courageous and willing to live!
