nem consigo acreditar que não tarda muito estas fotografias têm um ano! pronto, tudo bem, um ano talvez não, mas já são de maio. e maio já está tão longe que parece que foi no início deste ano que já está a terminar! mas ainda me recordo tão bem deste dia e do que me levou aqui neste dia. estava numa feira do lx factory à conversa com amigos, quando uma amiga me contava que estava à procura de casa. e procurar casa em lisboa pode ser tão deseperante! mas a dada altura contou-me de uma que tinha de visitar porque era num sítio que se dizia por aí ser simpatiquíssimo e… aparentemente não há quem lhe faça frente no que diz respeito aos arraiais de junho! esse sítio era a… vila berta.

i cannot believe that these pictures are almost one year-old. ok, they might not be that old, but i took these back in may. and may is so far away from us now that it feels like these were taken in the beginning of this year that is almost coming to an end already! and it’s interesting, because i remember this day and what took me to this place so well! i was at a market with some friends, when a friend told me she was looking for a new place with her boyfriend. and searching for a new place to live can be very frustrating in lisbon! and at a certain point she told me about this charming villa that apparently was the queen of celebrations in june! that place was called villa berta. 

nunca tinha ouvido falar de tal lugar em lisboa. não me dizia nada, mas o nome… o nome de si já era giro! o nome era curioso! apetecia conhecer, saber mais. que vila era essa dentro de lisboa? que arraiais eram esses tão bons? e como tinha mesmo de saber, num sábado de manhã pus-me à descoberta de lisboa até encontrar essa vila de que tanto se falava. fiquei rendida aos seus encantos. gira, de aspecto singular, quase que parece que entramos numa outra pequena cidade, quase que nos sentimos a entrar dentro de um espaço privado. as casas alinhadas, as varandas enormes, tão pitorescas, todos os detalhes eram absorvidos pelos meus olhos. como é que em 7 anos em lisboa nunca tinha ouvido falar deste lugar?

i had never heard of this place before, not even a clue. but the name? the name was so cute!! and after doing some research, i knew i had to find out where this villa was, i had to go there, to take pictures, to meet this amazing place. so one saturday morning, i went out to explore that villa! and i was in love! such a charming place, so different from all the small villas in lisbon. this one seemed taken from another place in the world, it feels like you’re in a private place… so picturesque. the lined houses, the huge iron balconies, all the details were being absorbed by my eyes. how on earth i was living in lisbon for 7 years and had never heard of this place?

 

aparentemente, e depois de ter feito algumas pesquisas, ao contrário das restantes vilas em lisboa, construídas para albergar trabalhadores fabris, esta vila foi edificada com o objectivo de albergar pessoas de uma classe mais burguesa e daí ter um aspecto diferente e terem sido utilizados materiais de qualidade superior na altura. assim que se entra na vila, notam-se duas frentes, uma com prédios de aspecto mais comum e outra de varandas grandes, esta última seria a parte mais nobre. tem mais de 100 anos e a curiosidade é que o seu nome vem do nome dado pelo arquitecto joaquim francisco tojal à sua única filha.

apparently and after doing some research, unlike other villas in lisbon built for workers from factories in the city, this villa had another purpose in mind – to accommodate an upper class. and you can see that other materials were used in its construction, to fit a more real estate purpose, rather than a working one. as you walk into this villa you notice two fronts, one with more common looking buildings and another one with the huge balconies and this was meant to be the more noble front of the villa! another curiosity about this villa is that its name – berta, comes from the only female child that this villa’s architect had – joaquim francisco tojal.

 

para quem quer visitar esta vila, basta procurar por vila berta em lisboa, mas fica a dica de que se situa junto ao largo da graça! ótimo para um passeio num sábado de manhã e seguir para uma visita à feira da ladra, logo ao lado!
