“In Chacha, a town of about 100,000 people, in the Amhara Region of Ethiopia there are so many children enrolled in school, that classes are held in two shifts, in order to meet the 50 students per teacher ratio, the national standard. The Chacha Full Cycle Primary School, established 57 years ago, serves as Cluster Resource Center – sort of a mother school for six area schools.
It’s here that a variety of UNICEF programs are helping to expand and enhance educational opportunities for children, thanks to funding from the IKEA Foundation raised during the annual holiday Soft Toy Campaign at IKEA stores worldwide. For every Soft Toy sold at IKEA stores each holiday season, 1 euro is donated to education efforts like these. Just one euro can buy books and school supplies for five students!
Already, the partnership between UNICEF and the IKEA Foundation has equipped the school with educational and teaching materials, furnished tables and chairs for teachers, and desks where students can sit and study. The refurbished library at Chacha Primary school has also been supplied with educational essentials and supplementary reading material, including dictionaries, works of fiction and popular local folk tales. The librarian is encouraged by the children’s strong interest in the new materials, and as proof, notes their habit of checking books out for weekend reading.
The newly-stocked library is also helping children catch up. “I started school two years late because there were no schools in my village. I came to Chacha to live with my aunt so that I could attend school,” explains Emebet Begena, a 13-year old in fifth grade. “The reference books and supplementary reading materials in the library have helped me improve my reading and understanding of issues so that I am on equal footing with my classmates.” Emebet was also a member of the Civic/Ethics club last year, which produced local learning aids in the Pedagogical Center. With help from teachers, the students created teaching-learning aides for every subject taught at the school.
Funding from the IKEA Foundation has also facilitated continuous professional UNICEF Soft Toys Ethiopia 2011 development for teachers which has been particularly effective and appreciated. “In the Ethiopian Fiscal Year 2010, three professional development trainings took place, and we organized an exhibition highlighting innovative teaching methods from each satellite school, which were presented by students at the Cluster Center,” says Ato Tilahun Getahen, Director of Seriti Primary School, one of the satellites supported by these UNICEF efforts. The teachers’ shared experiences in preparing lesson plans and teaching aids, as well as access to office equipment at the Cluster Resource Center, adds value to the overall educational experience for students and teachers alike.
With on-going support from the IKEA Foundation – thanks to millions of customers and coworkers who join in the IKEA Soft Toy Campaign each year – UNICEF can continue to make major improvements to help even more children in Ethiopia access a quality education, and all the opportunities for a better everyday life that it can bring.
IKEA customers contribute to improved education for millions of children in Africa, Asia and Central and Eastern Europe through the annual “Soft toy” campaign. During the holiday season at the end of each year, one Euro for every soft toy sold in IKEA stores is donated to Save the Children and UNICEF educational projects around the world. Together we are already helping 8 million children getting access to improved education.
The IKEA Foundation aims to improve the opportunities for children and youth by funding holistic, long-term programs that can create substantial, lasting change, and enable them to take charge of their own future. We work with strong strategic partners applying innovative approaches to achieve large-scale results in four fundamental areas of a child’s life. Currently funded programs benefit n estimated 100 million children.”
