personal project :: mushrooms

frequentemente recebo emails de alguém que admira o meu trabalho e procura conselhos sobre fotografia. e além de haver invariavelmente alguma sugestão para que eu conduza workshops, perguntam sobre como aprendi, como edito, o que faço, o que uso… e curiosamente por vezes falam-me em não querer passar pela frustração da tentativa e erro. ora o meu conselho, também invariavelmente, passa por muito trabalho, sacrifício e horas a fotografar e a editar.

i frequently receive emails from someone who admires my work and seeks for advice in photography. and asides the also frequent suggestion that i run some photography workshops, they always ask how did i learn, how do i edit, how do i shoot, why do i shoot what i shoot, what i use for editing… and the funny thing (or not so funny) is that eventually there is this general idea of “provide me your answers, so that i don’t spend tons of hours on trial and error”. well, guess what? that is exactly the way to learn. 

não há melhor conselho do que este. embora eu acredite que possamos ensinar outros, acredito que em cada um de nós está a resposta. não posso ensinar como chegar ao meu estilo de edição, não posso ensinar o meu olhar. posso sim aconselhar a que alguém saia de casa e fotografe tudo o que achar interessante e continue a fazê-lo até descobrir a sua voz, o seu estilo… fotografo há anos de forma contínua e hoje em dia já sinto que por vezes chegam sugestões fotográficas de fora que a mim não me dizem nada. e por outro lado, existem coisas diferentes, que apesar de não fazerem parte da minha perspectiva habitual, me interessam e são um desafio para mim. e esse é outro conselho que dou a quem quer ser fotógrafo, a quem é, mas sente-se um pouco parado na criatividade – sair e desafiarem-se noutras áreas.

there is not better way to learn, other than hard work and sacrifice! i just bought this book by jonathan canlas, and though he writes a lot about techniques, equipment and his experience, he also tells us that the better thing to do about film photography is to go out and shoot, it takes a lot of hard work and sacrifice, until the work we do is good, until we are able to charge our clients for our work. and this goes out for anything really. though i believe we can teach others, i cannot teach my vision, my editing style… i can, however, advise someone to go out and shoot whatever one feels interesting, until one discovers its vision, its style. i shoot on a regular basis for years and i know now what drives me, what interests me, and some of those areas are not the ones that i make a living out of. yet they are interesting to me, a challenge. and that is the other piece of advice i give to beginners or already photographers that feel stuck on their work and creativity – go out and challenge yourself in shooting something else different!

podemos ser apaixonados por algo na fotografia e até fazê-lo profissionalmente, mas não podemos parar de crescer, de desenvolver a nossa visão, de aprender, de nos desafiarmos. e assim começa esta rubrica aqui no blog, a de projectos pessoais. e hoje arranca-se com uma perspectiva bem juntinha ao chão. sem uma lente macro, mas depois de ter lido um pouco sobre o assunto, percebi que a 70-300mm poderia servir também para esta exploração. e assim foi… de partida para o jardim botânico tropical de lisboa e sintra. e adianto que o jardim botânico ganhou em quantidade e diversidade sem qualquer sombra de dúvida!

we can be in love with something in photography and even shoot it professionally, but we cannot stop growing, developing our skills, our vision, learning, challenging ourselves. and this is how this new blog feature begins, the personal projects. and today we start with a very close to the ground perspective. without a macro lens and inspired by this lady, i went out with my 70-300mm and tried my very best! let me tell you that capturing mushrooms is way harder than what you might expect. going down, shooting in low-light… but this is what i got of a full day exploring!
