i bet that when anyone thinks about amsterdam, its architecture is one of the things that comes to mind. obviously there are a lot of other characteristic things about amsterdam, like for instance bikes, tulips, cheese, canals, mills, coffee shops, the red light district (i think i was actually insulted by one of the girls, but i have no idea why!), and so on. having been there in june once, i noticed a lot of difference and it seemed a more colourful city. this time with all the dark clouds above us, it seemed a rather dark city.
however it’s still remarkable the way the buildings were built, how tilted they are and you get the impression that they are about to fall! weird and amazing at the same time! though you know they won’t be falling apart, you cannot get enough of looking at them!
this was on the red light district and i thought this reminded me of venice, though i was never in venice! but the canal, the church on the background and the buildings…. well, this could be venice to me! and below the cafes, mr twiggs would have loved to come with me to sit around and taste some beers! we are beer lovers, specially the belgium ones, so probably one day we might book ourselves a few days in belgium driving around small towns and taste their beers!
and this was a bit of amsterdam! i want to go back, but definitely in the summer! this weather makes me feel depressed and hopeless, like “if only the sun just appeared for an afternoon, i could take so many beautiful pictures with more light!” ok i’m light obsessed, i admit it! but i live in this sunny city, so blame me for it! and i’m also aware that we’ve been having cloudy and rainy days, but we’re also having 17º days, so who cares?! amsterdam i really like you a lot, but let’s get in touch in the summer ok? i’ll love you then!
there’s two other things i love about this city, everyone speaks english! everyone! last time i had been here, i drove from berlin to amsterdam and it was a major change, as in berlin no one speaks english! and even when i tried to speak something in german they would not answer me (why, oh why?? ok, that happened only once…). and the second thing is that you look around and people are more stylish than i’m used to, maybe not in the paris level kind of style, but definitely they have style! and this is it my friends!
more on my trip to the netherlands here!
