so as promised i’m back with another interview on the series about wedding photography, and yesterday we had the great and fabulous jonathan canlas who delighted us all with his honest and down to earth answers. by the feedback i received about his interview, he hit the spot about taking photos for pleasure in order to become a master of our art, as well as the hard work part. without hard work, no business will ever be successful, so this also means that no expensive camera, no hard cover book, nor $3000 workshop will make you a rockstar on your business, but though these can indeed help, it’s all up to you! and today we have the ladies of joie lala, who i discovered through their web-designer. i landed on an amazing website and found out that there were photographers behind that beautiful company.
1. hello, how are you? thank you so much for being here today… i really admire your work, so it’s really an honor to have you here today! so, to start, a little bit of a story, how did you get here to be a photographer? we’ve always loved photography as long as we can remember so it was a natural progression. and we met through a mutual photographer friend which is how we started shooting together.
2. why did you choose to be a wedding/portrait photographer? what drives you in this field of work? we love to work with people, especially during such a joyous time in their lives. weddings have such great energy and it keeps us on our toes.
3. what do you consider to be the main keys for a good wedding photographic work? understanding your clients individual personalities and having that eye for capturing the right moments.
4. what inspires you to make your work, what drives you to create the images you create? we’re inspired by everything from editorial photography to traveling to new places to the unique couples we work with.
5. the most beautiful place to host a wedding is… some place with special meaning for the couple and their family.
6. now, talking about a more technical point of view, tell me… what equipment do you use? we use canon 5d mark II bodies and all L-series lenses.
7. what do you carry in your bag for wedding days? we bring along everything (including backup equipment) ourfavorite lenses are the 50mm 1.2L and the 85mm 1.2L
8. what do you consider to be a challenge on a wedding day and how do you face that challenge? being on such a tight schedule and having things like time and light out of your control.
9. what do you do when you get home and start working on your other part of the job? our post process is pretty intense. we immediately back up our files and then put on some music, grab a cup of tea and start the editing process.
10. being a wedding photographer is always a very competitive business, how do you manage to stay focused and stand out from the crowd? we try to just stay true to ourselves and focus on our clients rather than what other photographers are doing.
taryn and shelby are the photographers behind joie lala and they simply delight me with their weddings! the details they capture, the light they have on their photos, and both the girls seem so relaxed and always with a smile on their faces. this is something i love to see on photographers, because as a photographer myself i know that we need to connect with our clients, and if we don’t give much of ourselves, our clients will not give us their true selves as well. and i think that taryn and shelby do this so well! you can also read their blog, if you want to catch up with the girls’ work! and tomorrow we’ll have the amazing andré teixeira of branco prata, so stay tuned for more wedding photography inspiration and deliciousness!
