as i promised i would come back for a very special edition of {sneak-peek handmade pledge}. it is special, because this is not the most common handmade thing you can find. it is handmade because it is handwritten. let me introduce you to masha.
“hello! my name is masha. i live in sofia, bulgaria with my husband and our cat. thank you, claudia, for inviting me on {apft} to talk about my lettering. honestly, it feels a bit awkward since i’m still in the process of learning and exploring.”
“it is very difficult to pinpoint the moment when my fascination with letters began. i know it might sound like a cliché, but i have carried that enchantment since i learned how to write at the age of 5 and since then i’ve been very conscious of my handwriting.”
“last year i had an epiphany and realized that lettering and calligraphy are something that i am really passionate about, so i decided to explore that creative passion more seriously. i started learning by myself – using available online resources and studying the works of lettering artists and calligraphers. i slowly started to collect tools and to experiment with different lettering techniques.”
“learning on my own is sometimes hard, since i have to figure out everything by myself, but on the other hand i think that this process of exploration and discovery, trying and making mistakes and occasionally getting it right is very valuable. i think that hand lettering should be more appreciated in this digital world, because like everything handmade, it is so unique and valuable because of its proximity to the moment of creation. this is what makes it more personal and honest, because imperfections are not flaws. i like it.”
“as for the future – when i gather a bit more confidence (which comes with lots of practice) i’d love to do event/social calligraphy and basically apply my skills to something tangible. if i’m allowed to dream big – i think it would be amazing to do a collaboration on a project – like doing calligraphy for a magazine or a book.”
and with all my heart i end this interview. what do you think? isn’t this just a wonderful work? do you know what i see her writing? love cards… wedding invitations… wedding vows… poetry… definitely calligraphy is something that is very precious… it reflects our personality, it makes you remember old love letters… masha is a lovely and beautiful girl and she shows her sensitiveness by the words she chooses to write. and because of that i asked her to be a guest here today! you can get to know more about masha on {flickr}, {blog} & {facebook}. have a lovely day, sweet friends!
